ENVISION MATH 2.0 FRENCH EDITION

WHAT IS ENVISION 2.0 ?

ENVISION is the name of our mathematics learning method.

It is a book divided into 14 topics,  each topic is divided into (approximatively) 10 lessons.
These lessons allow to work on the Common Core State Standards.
Two topics can work on the same Common Core Standard.

What I personally like about this method is the way lessons and topics are connected with each others. Indeed I use to teach with methods offering "linear" learning process, while Envision is more "spiral".
In other words, with Envision, once a notion is learnt, we don't stop working on it, at the contrary, it will be seen in-depth, with different perspective and will help to build new knowledge, and I think it help students to learn more at they rhythm.

Here are the common core standards we are going to work on during the year.

HOW ARE WE GOING TO WORK WITH ENVISION LESSONS / HOMEWORK / ASSESSMENT

The Envision book is HUGE, and because our first graders are still discovering how to manage and deal with school material, I decided every topic will be cut and stapled together (instead of cutting page by page and risking to loose some/most of them). At the end of a topic (when all lessons of it will be done), I will give it back to you.

Also, I will send home every time we start a new topic, an homework package with a due date. Each package has the exactly same amount of lesson of the topic we are working on in class. the goal will be to do it STEP by STEP ( I will post more informations about it when we will start the year).

Here are some homework precisions

- It is a review of the lesson of the day and a complement for the student.
- Not mandatory but I highly encourage to do it, students who do their homework, even on their own succeed more to work independently, stay on task easier and progress faster.
- Students who do their homework (even if it is just one page, even if everything is not perfect or completed) will be rewarded by extra recess time, extra fun activities, etc...
- There is absolutely no consequence not to do the homework, it is not mandatory, but I will just encourage the student to trust himself/herself and try !

- The goal is to do it day by day, to review the lesson of the day.
- It is alright if you don't have time to do all the exercise of one lesson, homework is a help, a complement.
- It is a tool for me when I correct the assessment, I check the homework and classroom work to understand where the student has struggled.
- There is a due date
- Please keep the package together
- Please bring them back one the due date
- I personally check every student folder on the due date to take the homework; if they are coming back late, it’s up to your child to give it to me.
- I accept late homework (a few days are ok, giving it back too late doesn’t make sens especially if I don’t have it when correct the assessment and while we are already working on another chapter)
- At the end of each chapter, when the assessment is done, I will give back to you : the classroom lesson, the homework, and the assessment of the ended chapter, it is for you, you can keep it.

Each topic will end by an assessment, resuming exactly the same type of exercise we have worked on.

ENVISION IN THE FRENCH CLASSROOM

Because we are in French Immersion, mathematics will be teach in French (you will see how amazing it is to see your child doing math in French !).
It is a little challenging at the beginning of the year, but not worries, everything is planned to help every student to feel surrounded, helped, listened and not lost !

How ?

Everyday, especially the first few months, Mrs Squires will work with the students on the current lesson in English (during 15-20 minutes max because it just has to be a little help/reinforcement) , and then I will do it in French.

At home, everyday, the student will have one homework page to do, this page will be in French and no worries, you will have access the same page in English on this website ;).

We will discuss together during our back to school meeting of the time dedicated to homework, and how to process, but one more time, no worries, everything will be adapted at the moment of the year, at the capacity of the student to focus, etc...

It is the same idea for the assessments : it will be done in the English classroom by Mrs Squires, directions in English, assessment page projected on the board in English and only the paper of it will be in French. At the end on the year, I will do myself the assessments with everything in French.

The assessments will be graded according to the PBG (Proficiency Based Grading) model given by the Granite School District, you can have more informations about this HERE

If a student struggle a little, I will make a "pre teach" group, while the classroom is in autonomy. The objective of this group is to pre teach the coming lesson, we play game, we manipulate, we work on the vocabulary before the lesson. It is short (10-15 minutes).

I choose to "pre teach" instead of "re teach" after a lesson because I don't want any student to feel they have to do "extra work". The goal of these little pre teach group is to bring confidence to students who may need extra help.

So if I resume, during one day, a student works on math at least 3 times : one time in English with Mrs Squires, one time with me in French, one time at home in French/English.

I can increase this amount to 4 times by adding the student in the "pre teaching group".

The same in French with me, at first we are going to manipulate and use cubes, repeat the vocabulary, do several games all together and then work individually on the book.
